those days were over

those days were over
when we walked through that wooded glen
to explore the might of the great tree
and the leaves fall at the feet
of weeping children who scatter
them with sticks

We thought those days were over
but we climb the white cliffs and release
rocks, they fall into the sea
and the children mock our indifference
with signs of their vagrant charm
their insistent smiles
